Verdict

A simple way for US residents to stack small amounts of bitcoin on everyday spending without a subscription. If you won’t hold a large Fold Reserve balance, the 0.25% base rate is modest, and it isn’t available outside the US.

How we read the terms: Prepaid debit card with no card or monthly fee and a 0.25% base reward. Higher rates need a Fold Reserve balance of $15,000 to $100,000. FX is not scored as a percentage because Fold charges a flat $3.00 per foreign transaction.

Not rated yet: verified criteria cover 55% of the weight, and we need 70% to give an overall score. How scores are calculated.

  • $3.50 per ATM withdrawal and $3.00 per foreign transaction without Fold Reserve

Overview

The Fold Prepaid Debit Card is a Visa issued by Sutton Bank, with Fold, Inc. as program manager. Rewards are credited in bitcoin, and Fold’s bitcoin custody is provided by BitGo, so this is a custodial product.

Every cardholder earns 0.25% on eligible signature purchases with no cap. Holding a Fold Reserve balance (closed-loop stored value you buy from Fold, not interest-bearing) raises the debit rate to 0.5% at $15,000, 1% at $25,000, 1.5% at $50,000, 2% at $75,000 and 3% at $100,000, on the first $5,000 of spend each month. Fold says Fold Reserve is reaching accounts in stages.
