The formula
Yearly spend = monthly spend × 12.
Net value = yearly spend × cashback rate − yearly spend × foreign share × FX fee − yearly spend × top-up fee − yearly card fees
Worked example
You spend $1,000 a month (so $12,000 a year) on a card paying 2% cashback. A fifth of your spending is in a foreign currency with a 1% FX fee, and the card has no top-up or card fees.
| Cashback: $12,000 × 2% | $240 |
| FX fees: $12,000 × 20% × 1% | −$24 |
| Top-up and card fees | $0 |
| Net value per year | $216 |
What the calculator doesn’t know
- Monthly cashback caps and excluded merchant categories — check your card’s terms.
- Price changes of a reward token or of tokens you stake for a higher tier.
- ATM fees, spreads on crypto-to-fiat conversion and weekend markups.
- Tax: in many countries spending crypto is a disposal. Read our tax explainer.
FAQ
Does the calculator know each card’s real terms?
No. You enter the terms yourself, so the result is only as good as the numbers you type. Each of our reviews lists the verified fees and cashback with a link to the issuer’s own page — copy them from there.
Why is my net value negative?
Fixed card fees, FX fees on foreign spending and top-up fees can add up to more than the rewards you earn. That usually means a no-fee card would suit your spending better.
Does it include changes in the token’s price?
No. If cashback is paid in a volatile token or you must stake tokens for your tier, the real result can be higher or lower. See our guide on staking tiers for the break-even maths.
